Supporting Tube-Fed Children and Empowering Parents to Find the Nutrition That Helps Their Children Thrive

Across Alaska, families caring for children who rely on tube feeding often face difficult decisions when trying to find the nutrition that works best for their child. While insurance plans and medical nutrition programs provide essential support, coverage options may sometimes be limited to a small range of standardized formulas. For some children, those formulas can be difficult to tolerate.

Through conversations with families, caregivers, and providers, AGAPI Inc. has learned that some children experience digestive distress when using certain formulas, including stomach discomfort, reflux, skin irritation, or feeding intolerance. When children require multiple feedings each day, these challenges can quickly become overwhelming for both the child and the family.

Parents know their children best. Many families discover alternative or specialized nutrition options that their child tolerates better, allowing them to grow and develop more comfortably. Yet accessing those options can be difficult when coverage restrictions or financial limitations create barriers.

AGAPI Inc. created the Feeding Little Ones initiative to help bridge this gap and empower families navigating these challenges.

The Need We See in Alaska

In Alaska alone, AGAPI Inc. is currently aware of 23 families with children under the age of five who rely on tube feeding and are navigating these nutritional challenges.

For many of these families, the cost of the nutrition that works best for their child averages approximately $650 per month per child. When a child requires multiple feedings every day, the financial burden can quickly become unsustainable.

Our mission is simple:
to empower parents and help their little ones thrive.

Through community support, AGAPI Inc. helps families raise funds and access resources so they can obtain the nutrition that best supports their child’s development and comfort.

A Family’s Story

Jessica is the mother of two young children who both rely on tube feeding.

Her youngest child was born prematurely. After months of trial and error, Jessica finally found a nutrition option that her baby tolerated well—one that reduced digestive distress and allowed her child to feed more comfortably.

When Jessica asked whether her insurance could cover this option, she was told that the product was not part of the vendor network associated with her policy and therefore could not be approved under her coverage.

Jessica even pleaded with the insurer, explaining that the nutrition she had found was less expensive than the formula currently being covered by her insurance, which cost approximately $1,600 per month. Despite this, she was told the alternative product could not be approved because it was outside the network of approved vendors.

Jessica shared that the formula covered through insurance often required up to eight hours each day to complete her child’s feeding routine. The specialized nutrition she had discovered worked much better for her baby and did not require such long feeding times or cause the same digestive distress. However, purchasing this nutrition entirely out-of-pocket was far beyond what her family could afford.

With two young children requiring tube feeding, the emotional and financial strain became overwhelming. Like many parents, Jessica simply wanted to provide the nutrition that allowed her children to feel comfortable and grow stronger. Navigating the system while managing the needs of two medically complex children placed enormous pressure on her family.

Jessica’s story reflects the challenges many families face as they try to find the nutrition that works best for their children while balancing medical guidance, insurance policies, and financial realities.
